Quick Tips for storing the Rugs
As there is a change in
season, people usually go for a change in house décor too. Whether it's just
about matching any color scheme or going
or a change just like that, usually people change the rigs very
soon. This is good but if the rug is an expensive one and good
quality product you should definitely make it a point to store it.
So storing a rug is
quite important and that too in such a manner that it doesn’t get damaged or
end up a hotbed for bugs. So given below are some steps which you should follow
to preserve your rug until the next redecorating.
Clean
the Rug First
The
first step for the storage of your rug is to clean it properly. Depending on
the type and fragility of the rug, you can go for a vacuum cleaning or take it
outside to beat the dirt out of it. Besides removing dirt which can result in
damage, it is important that you get rid of flea eggs, dust mites, etc. as they
attract bugs when stored.
So you should store rug
in a proper manner such as getting them professionally washed, cleaned and
prepared for storage. Part of the professional process also comprises of
applying an insect repellent.
Roll, Don’t Fold
Make
it a point to roll your rug. Folding the rug can result in creases that are very difficult to
remove. The method of rolling depends on the condition of the carpet pile
(the density of fibres of the rug) and
the condition of the foundation. If the pile is weaker (or if the pile and
foundation are in the same condition), so rolling with the pile in is
advisable. If the foundation is more vulnerable, then roll with the foundation
in.
Wrapping Your Rug
To
protect your rug further, consider wrapping it as you roll. However, be
cautious what you use to wrap it. A number of sites suggest Tyvek paper
because “it is tear resistant, water resistant, but still allows your rug to
‘breathe.’” The sites also explain that one should never store a wool rug in plastic
due to a high moisture content that can result in mildew.
Location for storing the rug
The
rug should be stored in a cool, dry area away from natural light. Avoid
basements and attics as these actually see wide fluctuations in temperature and
humidity. If possible, lift up the rugs to help with pest control. To defend
the foundation, don’t put up items on the rug.
Even it is important to
have a look at the rugs every few months for signs of bugs and carry out
necessary maintenance. You should also go for regular cleaning of the storage
area, including vacuuming and dusting.
If
there is no specific room in your house or if the conditions aren’t suitable
for storing your rug(s), a climate and humidity controlled storage units near you will be a perfect solution for storing,
