Storage unit Burglary Left Couple Without any Personal Asset

July 14, 2018

Dorothy Hunt and her husband were both excited to move to their new home. Little did they know that the time they are celebrating would become the worst nightmare of their life?

July 4th was an unfateful day for the couple as their household belongings worth hundreds of dollars were stolen from their storage unit in Rand. The stolen items included precious appliances, furniture and other expensive household stuff.

"I first noticed that the lock was gone. That shocked me. I lifted the door, and everything in the whole storage locker had been wiped out,” Hunt said.

There were several items that has immense sentimental value for the couple and now it is all gone in the burglary.

"I don't even have a picture of my mother and father left, or my daughter when she was a baby,” Hunt said.

Hunt says that he was told to buy disc lock as they are more secure and tough to cut. Even if the thieves try to cut these locks, the whole process will be too noisy. However, despite Hunt’s installing the disc locks, the couple had to face such a loss.

"Whoever did it must have had a grinder and been making a lot of noise,” said Hunt.

It is important that you check your items in the storage unit regularly to ensure safety. You may also check and buy insurance for your items. However, consider that the insurance company you are dealing with offers you a cover for all types of damages including theft, fire, rodents, natural calamity or more.

As per the experts, "You could look at it as renter's insurance, except that it covers natural disasters and break-ins.”

All this while, Hunts have been on a roller coaster ride of emotions. They have lost everything precious they once owned. However, they haven’t lost their hopes. The couple is expects to have a great start and hopes for the best.

"You keep remembering things that are special you'll never see again,” said Hunt. “I'd like to see the people and taken off the streets so it doesn't happen to anyone else."

Hunt confirmed that the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department is vigilantly investigating the case. There are a few surveillance images that could help. The images show a man driving an old model of Chevy Suburban. The police is now searching for this man who is supposedly in his mid-30s.

The police department also says that people should be vigilant while hiring a storage unit. A renter must make sure that the public storage near me has CCTV cameras installed and a high-security system installed. The storage services providers these days are very customer-friendly and think highly of security for the customers and provide them feature-rich facilities.

In another incident, a couple lost all their household items in rodent attack. The family hired a self-storage while they were moving interstate. After a year, when they visited the storage, they found nothing but rat feces, urine and their personal belongings chewed to straws.
